Uma investigação nos Estados Unidos descobriu que o brasileiro Roberto Fernandes, morto num acidente de avião em 2005, foi o responsável pela morte de três mulheres na Flórida há 20 anos. A identificação foi constatada após realização de exame de DNA, conforme explicou Gregory Tony, xerife do condado de Broward, à imprensa local nesta terça-feira, descrevendo o autor dos crimes como um serial killer em potencial, diante da possibilidade de ter feito mais vítimas.
Segundo o policial, Roberto deixou os EUA em 2001 pouco após um corpo ser encontrado em Miami. As autoridades norte-americanas queriam intimá-lo a depor, mas já era tarde demais, considerando que eles não tinham amparo legal para uma extradição com o Brasil.
— Os casos arquivados normalmente demoram meses, talvez até anos, antes de serem resolvidos — disse Tony, de acordo com a agência de notícias "Associated Press".
Em entrevista coletiva, o xerife destacou que, mesmo depois de duas décadas, "a justiça nunca expira".
Recentemente, um juiz autorizou a exumação do corpo de Roberto, que foi enterrado no Brasil. Com isso, os investigadores da Flórida conseguiram obter uma amostra de DNA após concluir que ele não havia fingido sua morte.
— Essa foi uma prova-chave — disse o detetive Zach Scott.
Em 2001, policiais encontraram uma impressão digital e colheram algumas amostras de DNA enquanto realizavam perícia na cena de um dos crimes de Roberto. Após análise nos bancos de dados, não houve qualquer correspondência. As suspeitas começaram a recair sobre ele quando houve uma troca de informações com as autoridades brasileiras.
O corpo de Kimberly Dietz-Livesey foi encontrado dentro de uma mala abandonada numa estrada em Cooper City, na Flórida, no dia 22 de junho de 2000. Ela foi a primeira vítima de Roberto Fernandes de que a polícia tem conhecimento. Havia marcas de espancamento.
Pouco depois, em 9 de agosto de 2000, foi localizado o corpo de Sia Demas, também com indicação de morte por espancamento. A vítima também estava dentro de uma bolsa, largada numa estrada perto de Dania Beach.
A terceira vítima foi encontrada cerca de um ano depois, no dia 30 de agosto de 2001. O corpo de Jessica Good tinha sido jogado na Baía de Biscayne, em Miami. Desta vez, a causa da morte foi por golpes de faca.
De acordo com informações da polícia readas à imprensa local, as três mulheres eram dependentes químicas e faziam da prostituição uma forma de comprar os entorpecentes.
No Brasil, Roberto foi absolvido pela morte de sua mulher num caso em que ele alegou ter agido em legítima defesa. O deteive Zach Scott contou que a família da vítima ficou insatisfeita com o veredicto e isso pode ter motivado a ida dele para o Paraguai, quando ele morreu no acidente de avião. Houve então um translado do corpo para ser enterrado no Brasil.
Segundo as autoridades dos EUA, o criminoso trabalhou para uma empresa de turismo em Miami e também como comissário de bordo.
